 Log House Project Underway
 August 27, 2008

The long anticipated reconstruction and development of the log house, located on the Mosley Farm property acquired in 2006, is underway. This historic structure, built in the mid-1930s, has strong ties to SMMM’s early years. Mary Mosley prepared the meals the first year of camp in her “summer” kitchen adjacent to the house’s location and several mission families lived in it, including the Garland Franklin family.

Plans for the “new” log house include a nature center with areas for the permanent display of both natural and historical materials of interest to camp visitors of all ages. It will be the launching point for the Old House Branch Trail along a beautiful mountain stream and has the potential for small group meetings such as a Bible class or cabin devotions. There has also been some research into the creation of a one acre pond near the log house.

The project calls for the dismantling of the log building, due to a few non-salvageable logs, and to use as many of the original logs as possible in building a new cabin in the same basic location. A local individual, experienced in log cabin restoration, is assisting the mission in the project. In recent weeks the log house has been dismantled with the viable logs tagged for reuse. The building site has been prepared and we would like to begin reconstruction this fall.

As with all projects undertaken by SMMM, this one must have the funds available to move forward. The early stages have been funded with the remaining resources from the purchase two years ago. If you would like to have a part in bringing this historic building back into service by contributing to the estimated $30,000.00 needed to accomplish it clearly mark your gift for the Log Cabin Project. There is also a need for volunteers to help in the construction. Should you be interested contact SMMM.
